Julia Halberstam: Overcoming Obstacles, Inspiring Others

Julia Halberstam is the beloved toddler of Blackbird CrossFit–she eats candy and animal crackers before a workout and it takes her forever to get her shoes on and ready to warm up. 😜 We kid!

She is more than just a member of the Blackbird CrossFit community; she’s a force of nature. With her infectious energy and wit, Julia lights up the gym and brings a smile to everyone’s face. And she drops jaws when she does lightening fast burpee box jump overs! Her unwavering dedication to fitness is truly admirable, and her work ethic is second to none.

Over the past year, Julia has been training tirelessly for the Adaptive CrossFit Games, showcasing her incredible strength and determination. As she’s pursued her athletic goals, she’s also emerged as an inspiring role model. Julia’s ability to overcome obstacles and embrace challenges has made her a symbol of resilience for many. She’s now found her voice and is using it to empower others, proving that anything is possible with hard work and a positive mindset.

While Julia is incredibly humble, her impact on the community is undeniable. She’s a valued member of the Blackbird CrossFit family, and we’re honored to recognize her as our final Athlete of the Month for 2024.

Meet Julia..

Tell us about yourself

My name is Julia Halberstam. I am 30 years old, with a bachelor’s degree in criminal law and a master’s degree in forensic investigation.

I was born in Russia and adopted at the age of 2 by incredible and somewhat crazy parents, who decided to have a family of 10 children. My parents had 4 biological children, as well as, 1 from South Korea, and adopted 5 from Russia. 

Growing up, my adopted siblings and I faced various challenges. We were born with physical deformities, like missing limbs and fingers. I was born with cupped hands, and when I came to America, my parents arranged for surgery to create “fingers” for me. I also do not have toes on my left foot.

Despite these challenges, I have always been active. I played soccer, ran cross country, and started doing CrossFit in 2018. I have embraced these differences and learned to see them as a normal part of who I am. When I think about my siblings and their physical challenges, I don’t see myself as disabled in comparison. I admire them greatly for the way they overcome obstacles and showcase their talents and abilities every day. They are truly remarkable and continue to inspire me in countless ways. 

That being said, it did take me a very long time to become an adaptive CrossFit athlete. For years, I pushed through my CrossFit workouts without using adaptive equipment. It was tough to hold onto the bar or rig, especially when things got heavy, but I persevered. Eventually, I realized that using adaptive equipment could help me do even more. So, I decided to embrace it. Although it still took me a little while to try the adaptive division of the CrossFit Open, with encouragement and a push from coaches and friends, I decided to give it a try this year. And now, here I am, a CrossFit Games Athlete!

It is so unreal, and I am beyond grateful for the opportunity this sport has given me to inspire others to embrace their differences and keep pushing forward. We are all capable of achieving amazing things, no matter what challenges we face.

What was the turning point that led you to CrossFit? What keeps you coming back to Blackbird week after week?

My gym closed down, so my sorority sister and I often talked about trying CrossFit. We decided to give it a go on Saturday, which turned out to be the perfect day for our first workout because Saturdays are partner workouts.

I’ve really loved the friendly competition and the amazing friends I’ve made along the way! It’s been such a great experience pushing myself as an athlete and discovering my full potential.

Can you share a specific instance where CrossFit has challenged you in a positive way? What did you learn from it?

As an adaptive athlete, I have faced many challenges and obstacles that have pushed me to my limits during training and competition. However, through hard work, determination, and perseverance, I have been able to accomplish and improve in ways I never thought possible. I have learned that with the right mindset and a willingness to push beyond my comfort zone, I can accomplish anything I set my mind to. I am proud of how far I have come as an athlete and look forward to continuing to challenge myself and achieve new goals in the future.

What is your favorite memory or experience from the gym?

I honestly can’t choose a favorite memory or experience. I have truly enjoyed every moment at Blackbird; it felt like home after the first week, creating a strong sense of belonging.

What is your favorite CrossFit movement, lift, or WOD? Least favorite?

My favorite moments include box jumps, toes to bar, and pull-ups. My favorite lift is cleans. As for workouts, I can’t decide between Fran or Kelly.

What do you enjoy the most about Blackbird or CrossFit in general?

The community support as they rallied behind me as an adaptive athlete was a true testament to the gym and its members at Blackbird.

Tell us about your experience training for and competing in the Adaptive CrossFit Games this year. What did that experience mean to you?

Training for the Adaptive CrossFit Games has been an incredibly challenging journey, both physically and mentally. Every session requires me to dig deep and confront my own limitations. There were moments when I question my abilities and wonder if I can keep going, but it’s in those moments that I learn the most about resilience and determination.

CrossFit thrives on community, and this has been especially hard during training. The support of my fellow athletes has been a source of motivation and encouragement. We share a common goal, and the energy in the room during our class is palpable. Whether it’s celebrating each other’s achievements or offering a helping hand when someone struggles, the bond we’ve formed makes the grueling workouts feel more manageable.

On the other hand, working out alone can be a different experience altogether. While there are times when I appreciate the solitude and the ability to focus solely on my own pace and form, it can also feel isolating. The motivation that comes from being surrounded by others is sometimes hard to replicate in solo sessions. There are days when I find myself lacking the drive to push through, missing the encouragement and the shared energy that a group provides.

I had an incredible experience participating in the Adaptive CrossFit Games. From the moment I arrived at the venue, I felt surrounded by community, determination, and inspiration. The energy was palpable, with athletes of all abilities preparing to showcase their hard work and resilience.

As I walked through the venue, I was struck by the diversity of the competitors. Each athlete brought their unique journey and story, demonstrating that fitness and determination know no bounds. The sense of community was overwhelming; everyone was there to support one another, celebrating each other’s achievements regardless of the outcome.

During my events, I felt a mix of excitement and nerves. Each workout was designed to push our limits, but the adaptive modifications allowed everyone to compete at their own level. The cheers from fellow athletes and spectators created an encouraging backdrop, helping to drown out any self-doubt. I was amazed by the creativity and adaptability of the workouts; they truly highlighted the spirit of CrossFit—finding ways to challenge ourselves while respecting our individual capabilities.

One unforgettable moment was during the last workout of my competition. As I approached the last round of my workout, fatigue set in, but I was determined to finish strong. The athletes and the crowd rallied behind me, shouting words of encouragement. In that moment, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging and support. It was a reminder that we were all in this together, regardless of our differences.

After the competition, I took a moment to reflect on the entire experience. It wasn’t just about the physical challenges; it was about the mental and emotional growth that came with it. I had pushed my boundaries, met incredible individuals, and learned more about what it means to be adaptive—not just in sports, but in life.

Can you share a specific health improvement or positive change in your life that you attribute to CrossFit?

I have never been more confident in myself and my abilities!

When you are not CrossFitting what is your favorite thing to do?

I enjoy hiking with my Breezy, Tilly, and Mouse… and Summer.

What is one fun thing about you that we may not know yet?

I went to the States for bowling in high school and won the State Championship.

What advice would you give to someone who is hesitant to try CrossFit?

Trying CrossFit with a friend can make the experience less intimidating. You can support each other, share the learning process, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes from tackling new challenges together. I started my CrossFit journey with a friend, and I wouldn’t change that first experience for anything.

How has your approach to nutrition changed since starting CrossFit?

After my workouts, I make sure to have a protein shake with fruit. I also don’t deprive myself with a delicious dessert on most nights… every night, haha!

What is your favorite workout fuel? What about your favorite indulgence?

My favorite snacks for fueling workouts are Sour Patch Kids and animal crackers.

Over time, I’ve noticed significant changes in both my body and mind that have contributed to an overall sense of happiness and fulfillment. My transformation goes beyond just aesthetics; I have gained strength and stamina, making everyday tasks feel easier and more manageable. Whether it’s lifting heavier weights at the gym or simply having more energy to walk or run, I can feel my body becoming stronger and more resilient. This newfound strength not only enhances my physical capabilities but also boosts my confidence. I stand a little taller, move a little more freely, and take pride in what my body can achieve.

On the mental side, the impact of regular workouts has been profound. Each session in the gym or on the track serves as a release—an opportunity to clear my mind and focus on the present moment. The endorphins that flood my system during and after exercise create a natural high, elevating my mood and reducing feelings of stress or anxiety. I find that I’m better equipped to handle life’s challenges with a positive outlook.

Establishing a routine of working out has provided structure to my day, instilled discipline, and given me a sense of accomplishment. It’s amazing how a simple commitment to my health can lead to such a powerful shift in my overall happiness.
